Dominion Case
Eiko WagenknechtIn the approximately two years I’ve been playing Dominion, I’ve tried all kinds of storage systems. Starting with the original boxes, it quickly became cumbersome and space-consuming with multiple expansions. So I crafted Dominion boxes, which turned out to be very time-consuming and ultimately didn’t provide enough space. Next came an experiment with repurposing an original box with internal subdivisions and self-made card dividers.

My Storage Problems with Dominion
But here too, the limit was quickly reached. So I took a 10-Euro aluminum case from the hardware store (Hornbach), “gutted” it, and retrofitted it with storage compartments and dividers for the Dominion cards. Since the card dividers were already there, the format was also adapted accordingly, with everything in landscape orientation. This worked quite well for the two base editions and the first four expansions, but there was no more room for additional cards.
Converting to Portrait Format
To accommodate the two newest expansions, it was time to convert the case again, this time to a portrait format so that significantly more cards could be stored.
Now the case is no longer 95% full, but only about 65%, offering enough space for Hinterland and Dark Ages!

I don’t want to bore you with the exact details, so here’s a quick photo: This is what the case looks like now, only the card dividers haven’t been sorted back in yet (and expansions 5 and 6 still need to be purchased).

A handcrafted wooden box would certainly be more elegant, but considering the low time and material investment, such an aluminum case is a great compromise – and it’s lighter than wood too.
Instructions for Recreation
If anyone wants to recreate this:
- The case is available at Hornbach (at least at my local store). The interior dimensions are approximately 428 x 316 mm.
- Suitable craft wood (4mm thick) is also available at hardware stores.
- A good jigsaw and some sandpaper are quite helpful for the work.
- I created the exact layout of the wood pieces to cut out on my PC and uploaded it here: Dominion Case Template (PDF)
- The card dividers can be found in a separate blog post of mine: Dominion Card Dividers
And here’s another close-up shot (at this point, the case was not yet fully sorted):
